IDEA Launches Applications for Summer Democracy Fellows Program for 2027
After launching the Summer Democracy Fellows program this past summer, IDEA is seeking applications for the second cohort for summer of 2027.
From the end of May through mid-August, fellows will work inside congressional offices or organizations adjacent to the Hill, gaining firsthand experience with federal lawmaking while bringing IDEA’s perspective on democratic engagement and innovation to Capitol Hill. They will contribute to the daily operations of national policymaking. This includes researching democratic innovations, drafting briefing memos, and assisting with constituent service projects. This first-hand exposure will allow future leaders to understand the complexities of federal law making while providing essential support to the offices strengthening our democratic institutions.
IDEA 2026 Fellow Ryan Mahoney described the program as:
“An unforgettable and enriching experience that allowed me to forge personal and professional connections, better understand our government, and assist the important work of a Representative from my state.”
IDEA will place fellows in Senate, House, committee offices, or organizations adjacent to the Hill. The fellowship includes travel funds, intern housing, and a biweekly stipend, as well as providing mentorship, educational development opportunities, and support for professional networking. Placements may be in Democratic, Republican, or nonpartisan offices. Fellows must be available from the first week of June through the first week of August 2027.
IDEA’s Program Director Adam Duffy encourages any interested students to apply:
“After this past summer, we are excited to grow this program and offer more students the chance to intern in DC and represent IDEA. We hope this program opens the door for students who may have been discouraged from pursuing a summer in DC otherwise.”

The deadline for applications is Friday, October 16, 2026. Decisions are expected by the end of December, and students will be matched with an internship in the spring.
