Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

J.D. Vance presents Beyond Hillbilly Elegy: Recovery, Rebirth, Renewal

J.D. Vance
November 7, 2017
4:30 pm - 5:45 pm
Mershon Auditorium

J.D. Vance will propose a hands-on approach to problems facing his native state of Ohio: opioid addiction, under-preparedness of the workforce, and domestic instability. Through his non-profit organization, Our Ohio Renewal, Vance, a 2009 alumnus of Ohio State, will tackle these issues that shaped his upbringing in Middletown, Ohio, subject of Hillbilly Elegy, Vance’s #1 New York Times best-seller.

An advocate for policy changes, Vance believes that involving the family and community can be even more effective in solving these seemingly intractable—and interrelated—problems. “Where civil society can be most helpful,” he says, “is in giving people real networks and social groups that can support them when things are tough, offering them access to better opportunities, to jobs, and to activities in their community.”

The lecture is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged by Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017. Paid visitor parking is available at the Ohio Union South Garage. Please visit the lecture webpage for more information regarding the event and registration.
